Butterflies and Cotton Blossoms

Lately I have been having to go to Brownsville a few times a week and it has given me the opportunity to add some variety to my morning walks. I have to confess that I have to force myself to go walking much of the time, but when I do, I am always glad I went.

Today, I went to Resaca de la Palma, hoping to see the beautiful birds, but it was a bit of a disappointment. I found out that the park doesn't feed the birds in the birding area until September, and there wasn't much to be seen. However, the butterfly garden was all a' flutter. Even at that, I didn't stay long because the mosquitoes were atrocious!

Upon leaving, I had to catch a few pictures of the cotton blossoms in the adjacent field. I saw these plants cropping up all over the place, and I had a feeling they must be cotton. Google lens confirmed my suspicions.

I'm anxious to follow their progress, as I didn't really take notice of the cotton fields last year until they were all done in.

I remember my mom and dad talking about how they used to pick cotton in the south when they were first married, but I had never seen cotton fields before moving here.

Oh! Those Beautiful Green Jays

I will long remember my day at Resaca de la Palma as my first truly amazing birding adventure!

My first wish was to seen some green jays, which I had only seen at a distance one day at Laguna Atascosa. Well, today I was not disappointed. I saw green jays galore!

Green jays can be found from southern Texas to Central America.

The green jays alone made my day at Resaca de la Palma worthwhile, even had I not seen a bigger variety of birds. But I did see more, and it was certainly the icing on the cake. Tune in next time to see more.

Resaca de la Palma State Park

Today I had an appointment in Brownsville, so I thought it a good opportunity to check out Resaca de la Palma State Park, just west of town. It has the reputation of having an excellent birding park.

When I first got there, after going inside to get my park pass, I went around back of the building to the bird habitat. All of the viewing areas were full, so I decided to do a little hiking and then catch the birds on my way back.

I found it to be one of the prettier walking parks in the area. But now, on to the birds!

The Joys of Pet-Sitting on the Island

Pet-sitting on the island offers me the chance to get up and see the sunrise without having to cross the bridge in the dark. However, I almo...
